The University-Industry Collaboration resource Network,
UNICORN, was established over the summer to promote
interest and opportunities for collaboration between
the University and Industry on innovation and technology.
This resource network is the co-operative result
of a partnership between HKU and the HKU Graduates
Association (HKUGA). UNICORN seeks to bring together
industrialists and University researchers to identify
commercially relevant research topics and foster
an innovation and technology culture in industry
and the community at large.
Regular activities will include: forums, talks,
lectures, panel discussions, research groups, site
and factory visits¡K.for dynamic exchange of experiences
in technology industries. Areas of interest include
e-commerce, digital networking, new materials, microelectronics,
information technology, genetic engineering and
biotechnology amongst many others. UNICORN held
its inauguration and first public forum on July
24, 1999. Five speakers shared their success stories
in the display, microelectronics and pharmaceutical
industries and Traditional Chinese Medicine. They
included Mr Herman O M Leung from Merck-Apotec Co.
Ltd; Mr Paul S H Lai of Score Concept Semiconductor
Ltd; Mr Francis C L Lee of Digital Heritage Publishing
Ltd; Mr Harry Yeung from LKK Health Product Groups
Ltd; and Mr Jimmy Lo of Lighthouse Technologies
Ltd. The forum's special commentator, Mr Antony
Leung, called for the development of high value-added
industries to improve Hong Kong's competitiveness.
